Fostering Independence

Running Time: 8 min 42 sec.

Not doing too many things for your children can foster self-confident, competent, independent children as they learn to do more and more things for themselves.

Hostess Barb Hazelton speaks with guest, pediatrician Dr. Tim Jordan, about how parents can help children become confident and independent.

Guest Lisa Nichols is a newly-divorced mother of four children (ages 3,8,13,16). She is trying to find balance between doing too much for her children versus allowing them to develop responsibility. Subjects discussed include:

  • Parent's background
    · A parent's own background affects how he/she parents. It's helpful to understand this influence.
  • DOING things for your children
    · is a way of showing them love
    · may fulfill a parental need
    · is often easier than teaching them how to do it themselves
  • NOT DOING things for your children
    · can foster self-confident, competent, independent children
  • FAMILY MEETINGS can be very helpful
  • FOLLOW-THROUGH after goals have been mutually decided is very important
